Is it possible to network 2 ancient computers using their phone jack modems?

This is a really, really stupid question, so if you're a computer expert, prepare to be insulted by it.

Got an old HP notebook, 10 years old, and a classic iMac, same vintage. The notebook has a 56.6k modem PC card with a phone cord. The iMac has a phone jack and an internal modem. Would it be possible to network the two computers, using only the telephone line?

Yes they can go on line. I had a windows 95 once and it could go on line just fine. Slow as a turtle compared to the computers today and I only had a couple gigs of a hard drive.

The answer is no unless you have two phone lines. The modem has to dial out to reach other other computer's modem. So it's not like an ethernet cable that would allow you to just plug them into each other. However, there is hope for you yet. Do the computers have parallel or serial ports? If so, then you could use those to make a connection between the two.
