1. Your cable/ADSL modem

If you are having a cable/ADSL internet at home, you will probably be given a modem which gives you a wire/output (usually RJ45/ethernet). In the same modem, you will see plug points for more than one output. If thats the case, you can get a ethernet/RJ45cable (modem to PC) and just plug the wire in the modem and your other computer.

2. Hub or Switch or Wifi router

If you are just given a ethernet cable and you don't have a modem then you should get one of the above hub/switch/wifi router. you need to implement MAC address filtering. Check your router's configuration page and look for filtering. Some routers you have to choose Allow or Deny. you want Allow. Then you enter the MAC addresses of the wireless adapters that are allowed on the network. You get this by typing IPCONFIG /ALL at a command prompt on each computer. Scroll down until you find your wifi adapter and look for "physical address". It will be 6 pairs of hexidecimal characters

If you know the mac address of all the systems you want to use your router you can put these into you router and this will only allow you and anyone you want to use it.

sometimes it depends on wat the film is etc sum take longer than others to transcode, to make ur dvd burning alittle faster make your own dvd video than click on the more tab then video options then click on the dvd video tab at the top then change your quality setting to super long play then encoding mode to fast mode super long play is gr8 coz u can fit about 3films on one disc and the quality is still gr8

Go to some place like http://www.speedtest.net/ and see what your speed to the locations of the servers you use is. Add the number of computers that will be using those servers and multiply. That (plus a little for email, web browsing, etc.) is the bandwidth you need. Since the internet (from your connection, through maybe a dozen or two routers, to the end point you're connected to) runs at a lot lower speed than your connection to your provider, you probably have more bandwidth than you can use now.

Wit Vista you need to have a user name on both machines so it authenticates. Meaning, jim on XP and Jim on Vista. So JIm can log in.

Make sure that file sharing is enabled on the Vista machine. It's a checkbox in one of the network related sections of control panel.

Right click on My Computer of the Vista machine, go to Properties, and check the computer name. Also in this tab, make sure both computers are on the same Workgroup.

On the XP machine, you should now be able to got to Network Connections on Control Panel %26gt; My Network Places %26gt; Add a network place %26gt; and browse for the name of your Sister's computer.

Once you have her computer added as a place you should be able to browse folders set at shared in their properties. If not something is being blocked by a firewall. So unplug your internet connection and turn off all firewalls on your computers and then set the network place. It should work normally after setting it up the first time.

It really depends on what you are trying to install.

While some 'simple' programs may work you will not be able to open the same program on more than one computer at the same time. Also, other programs such as MS Word, etc, will not work like that. They are not "network" programs and not designed to function in that manner.

There is a network application out there from Citrix which might help, also Microsoft has some server level apps which allow this to happen -- but again, it generally will not be as easy as it seems. If you read the license agreement on most peices of software you are actually not allowed to do this. 1 computer, 1 license, 1 installation. Some programs will allow multiple installations on seperate computers but have a clause which states that it can only be used on any ONE computer at anytime.

you just need a router. most routers allow you to network up to 4 computers. it's simple to install yourself. and you can get one from walmart for about $50. Linksys is a good brand.
Just go out and buy a router, and hook it up using the WEP key, which you have to search for(its a nmber you use to accses the router. I have a 2Wire router, and I know the WEP key can be found on one of the feet of it.

The above paragraph is single spacing.

Double spacing leaves a line between each line.
double spaced is pressing the space bar (the big long bar) twice.
Double spaced means you need a blank line between two lines of text. You can set this up in Word by clicking format/paragraph/line spacing. Set it to '2'.
Leave space between each line of words. Just type as usual and at the end of your story insert cursor at the beginning of each line and press enter and continue that for each line...no problem

If you are switching between Macs and PCs, you can't that I know of. If all the same, the iTunes account needs to be registered to you, otherwise it treats it as a foreign machine and tries to reformat.

Think of restarting windows after something went wrong and you have the option of starting in safe mode, normally, or last good configuration. It's like choosing last good configuration everytime.

well i've done this before taking a wireless laptop and using it to share the internet with a laptop that didn't have a wireless network card. Let's say you're running a non-wireless computer to another non-wireless computer. You're going to go to the Network Connections under Control Panel of the computer that has the internet connection. Right click on this item and goto properties. From there click on the Sharing Tab, then click on the option that says "Allow other computers to connect through this Internet Connection." Make sure the ethernet cable is connected from the Internet computer to the non-internet computer. The main downside is that this requires two network cards on the computer with internet. A gateway will issue "Local" address to each computer and that is a LOCAL network so you should already be connected! Just enable file and printer sharing and put them on the same workgroup. I'm a bit busy right now but i believe you could do a standard "broadcast" mesage out across the network and those alive will respond back...or you could do a "ping" on each host on the network based on your addy...you'd need to use the subnet mask to determine the host portion and then just iterate through each up to 254 and see who responds back....it wont tell you all the computers across the network, just the computers within the mask (potentially up to 255 computers).......

Every computer must have a properly configured wireless NIC (available in PCMCIA, USB, or PCI slot designs). Ethernet means it is a wired connection using ethernet cable with RJ-45 connectors. I don't know about any general software, but you can use Microsoft Source Safe as synchornization things. Add some project in it and use that project, then add the corresponding Excel file in it. Install the source safe on each system (one will be the server for source safe with admin rights). Then for each system retrieve the project with in the Soruce Safe Window.

You'll be having the Excel file copy on computer, then on each system make it writeable using source safe and edit and at the end "Check in" using source safe. It will ask you to merge the changing, select "Yes"

Well, there are routers which are wireless. One good one that works for most of the computers is Wireless-g 2.3 GHz Broadband Router 54 Mbps Linksys, although you need to buy a wireless card, so the router can work. The wireless card is for all routers though.

You can have dual boot on a single hard-drive.

You can do it 2 ways:

1. Install Win XP first, then install VIsta

2. INstall Vista first, then install WinXP.

(in both cases, you have to partition the HDD).

I've tried option 1. It is easier, as Vista will handle the dual boot configuration. If you choose option 2, there are several more steps to take.

If you google "Dual Boot" there'll be thousands of sites telling us how to go about it. However, i've found this instruction particularly easier to follow.

It's easier with 2 hard drives, but can be done with a single drive just as easy. Make sure you install xp first, then vista, because vista has a bootloader it will install for you. Then when you boot your computer you'll see a text menu giving you the option of booting either vista or an earlier version of windows.

Sorry, it won't work. One license for one computer. With Vista, you have to connect to the microsoft servers to activate it or it won't work, and you can only activate the serial number on one machine.

The easiest way is to use a "switch" and Microsoft Networking.

I have a "switch" linked below, which is the one I use for linking my laptop and desktop and having them share an internet connection.
If you just want to connect the laptop to the desktop, you need the cross-over cable. I don't exactly know what the usb-ethernetadaptor is, but I assume you can plug the cross over in it. Plug the other side in the networkcard of the destktop.

If you have windows ME (the laptop probably came with winME), you can use the wizard homenetwork (somewhere in the startmenu) to establish connection.

I once connected a laptop to my computer using a serial cable, and therefor I needed to install the NetBEUI-protocol and the tcp/ip-protocol. But I think the wizard will do that for you.

Simpletech makes a USB jump drive that uses SD memory cards. You can usually find them for about $12 or so. That's what they give us at work so that is what I use to read my photos.

Do you still have the USB cable that goes from the camera to the USB slot on the computer? If so, you can do it that way too.
Some slots look as if the Scandisk should fit it perfectly, but will not. I recommend that you buy an adapter, with a usb end. Ask the salesman, so you can return it if it is the wrong adapter. If you buy one with the usb, then that will fit any computer in the future. A good investment.
It will show up as a Removable Disk, just check for stuff like that.

Yes, you can use a USB switch (not a USB hub, that's different). Assuming the backup device is USB, this will work, although only one of your computers can use the device at a time. I think you also have to manually switch which computer can use the device using a button or hotkey.

If this is impractical to you, go the network route, setting up a network is really pretty easy.

To check DMA/PIO mode within Windows:

Control Panel%26gt;System%26gt;Hardware%26gt;Device Manager%26gt;IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

From there, right click on one of the channels and choose 'Properties%26gt;Advanced Settings'. All drives should be DMA mode. The 'Current Transfer Mode' for Hard drives is usually DMA 4-6 and DVD burners DMA 2-4, DVD ROMs usually DMA 2. If you see any in PIO mode, that can slow things down.

Changing them back may be easy or complicated. First see if you can change them in that window. If not, I usually uninstall the channel with PIO mode and let the OS reinstall it. This will usually take a reboot.

Wireless networks require that you have some adapters. On desktop PC's you can install a Wireless NIC with an antenna on it, or a laptop can use PCMCIA Cards. Your wireless access point must be placed centrally, to achieve the best possible signal to all computers. If you wire it, the most popular way to do it is purchase a router. But a hub is good enough for a 3 computer system and it is also faster. If you intend on adding computers at a later date, then start with the router as it will do the job just fine.

I think it cost about 40$ and it works great.If you are wireless, you can also get a wireless router, which you can connect to your internet source, and configure your computers to get the signal, and lock the signal so other people can't use it.
