The typical desktop computers are not using much electricity. I had the same concern with my 4 desktops plus 2 printers, scanner, modem, router, UPS, and few other devices connected to the same outlet. I hired electrician to take a look. It turned out that my entire load was less then 2 Amps, while the line is capable of handling something like 12 Amps on a single circuit breaker. It turned out that I also had the washer and drier on the same circuit and even that, when added to the load, didn't exceed the maximum capacity.

If your AVR can handle 2 amps of load (and it should), you would be fine.

basically, if you properly installed and configure your units, you won't have trouble about your networks. why try checking your firewall or try to share something to your computers. it would be better if you declare something to share to your computer. and these will determined by the computers. especially when you are using XP.
With windows XP PCs should see each other even when the workgroup names are different. Can the other two machine see each other? This looks like a firewall issue. Try disabling the firewall on the machines for a brief time and checking to see if the all the PCs can see each other. I would suggest that you disconnect the router from the internet before you disable the firewall(s) to prevent security problems. You can do this by pulling out the lead connecting the router to the telephone socket. This will not stop your network from working. To see a resource (drives and folders) of other PC's this needs to be shared first. To do this do a right click, (or as my friend Jabba says do a wrong click :) then select sharing and security , click the share this folder radio button and click OK. You probably need to wait a little while windows Vista discovers this newly shared resource. Let me know how you get on with this.
Yer Jameer probably right check that your on the same work group. also if you have manually assigned the ip address check that the first three sets of number are the same and the the last set diffrent i.e 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.4
I am having the same problem. So far I have discovered that running the Windows Network wizard is incompatibel with my BT Home Hub. Network wizard sets the ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) but I have to disable it. The Windows Help file take me to Network Connections but thereafter the instructions don't match what I see. Ok so there seems to be something wrong with my computers ethernet port. I have tried 3 different modems and several different ethernet cords. I can currently use the internet via the usb port but i need to get the ethernet port going. The man from time warner said that it is not a problem with the modem but that there is some type of program overriding the ethernet port. Where can i find out what is overriding the ethernet port? If it's a driver problem, should be easy to find the manufacturer's site and get the updates. A failed NIC is a little harder as this has you buying a new one (for about $5) and opening the comptuer and installing it. The cable really could be the problem here. Make sure you're not trying to use a crossover cable. Yes there are testers you can buy that will tell you for sure, but you already own the BEST testing set on the market. Your eyes. Have a look at the individual wires on each end. Flip them over so the little retention clip is facing down. Now, you'll see 8 tiny wires and they're color coded, blue/blue white, orange/orange white, green/green white, brown/brown white. IF you're using a straight cable, the wires will be the same on each end. IF you're using a crossover cable, pins 1,2,4,6 will be switched. See my example below. Good luck. If you want both to connect to the internet, there are some variables.

If you are using a cable modem:

Connect the cable modem to the wall, and connect the network cable to a ROUTER. A router is a device that splits the internet into 2 or more computers. Just go to walmart and pick up a router. I use a WRT54G. After you buy the router, plug the cable modem into the router. Plug each of your computers into the router. You should be set to go.

If not:

ok well I have Verizon (The Fastest version of DSL) and I have 2 computers. On the compaq, the speed is 54.0 Mbps, and it stays at that speed. But on the Gateway (This Computer) the speed is at 11.0 Mbps and sometimes it will drop down to 1.0 Mbps and it does this very often. I have tried to switch wirless cards but the same exact thing happens! I have tried moving the Modem (Router) closer to this computer but it doesnt help at all. Could it be a setting on this computer? Why is the speed so much higher on the Compaq than on the gateway?

Also, I have the Actiontec DSL Modem from Verizon. (They SUCK! I cant believe I'm still with them and havent broken my contract yet!!) Anyway... ANY help is MUCH appreciated. Thank you so much!

if one is a desktop, connect your cable modem to the router and then the desktop to the router, via lan cables.

the router will come with a cd that will lead you through the entire setup.

I doubt the current one will handle it's load for that long, more like 15 minutes. You are looking at thousands in cost just to get 15 to 25 minutes on all this. Better is a supply to give 20 minutes max for each machine, and a backup generator for extended support. Much cheaper.

Technically, yes, you can connect them in what is known as a 'cluster'. However, this probably isn't a practical solution, since you can't really run Windows like this, and it takes a lot of effort and know-how to do. You could also opt to set them up as a server farm or something like that if you have a use for it (ie, storing lots of data, rendering 3D animations, etc), which is easier, but still not something for the casual computer user.

Your best option may be to cannibalize parts (esp. RAM) from some to improve the performance of others.

How do I get my wireless laptops/computers to reconnect to my router without restarting my router?

I've been having this problem from quite some time. My problem is that other laptops/computers in my household connected wireless (I'm the only one wired) after being turned off and turned back on, their internet does not work. It will work again after I reset my router. It was becoming very vexing reseting my router every time so I replaced it only to find out the same problem continues to exist.

I was previously using a Netgear WGT624, which also gave me dropped connections and wouldn't reconnect until it was reset. Now I'm using a 2wire Gateway 2700HG-B, I haven't heard any problems from the laptop users but a computer connected through a wireless print server (Netgear WGPS606) couldn't go on the internet until the router was reset. Oddly, the status of the print server said it was connected to the router but the internet was not working.

Have you tried setting the wireless print server up with a dynamic IP so it won't change every time the wireless is reset. You might also try that on all computers so a reset won't affect the computers either wired or wireless. Turn off DHCP on the router and give all devices a static IP and it will probably help.

Not sure haw many ports on the back of the router, but make sure you are plugged into #1 and #2 port on the router, router and modem connected by cable going to WAN port. Then turn them all off and turn them back on in the order of modem first, let it initialize, then router, give it a minute to set up, then turn on the computers, and they should work just fine. i have 4 pcs. I have 1 bsnl broadband connection , modem is smartax mt 880 . I got hub , cross cables. Actually i know hard ware is alrite , as i previously called one networking professional and everything was going smooth till i installed new xp in all computers. I want to know step by step how to configure them all , all from tcp/ip thing to setting lan connections. Just think i am totally dumb in this. Every reply will be appreciated.

don't use cross cables. use straight cables if you're connecting to a hub. if you have windows xp and there are no issues with the computers themselves, most likely the network adapter will pick up an IP address automatically when you turn the pc on

If you upgraded to XP, then it automatically becomes the master if other systems are not XP. You 'll first need to goto control panel and then -%26gt;Network and Sharing. From there you need to start "Setup a Network Connection".

The Wizard should do all the settings for you automatically. Keep a USB stick handy as it will allow you to transfer settings to other PCs in your network.

If you have done this before on 98 even with help then XP should be as easy as a breeze. Otherwise let me know and I'll guide you through it.

Since you are using a HUB I also advise you to put all your system on the same WORKGROUP (which you can access by right clicking "My Computer" -%26gt; Properties.)

P.S. In reply to big_jerm : Crossover cables are used for HUB as they are single bus connection similar to direct PC-to-PC. Straight/parallel cables are used for router where the BUS is NOT shared. Please do not confuse him as this unverified info could cost people money.

I agree that uniforms should no be banned. Although they're not something yo'd wear if you had a choice it stops bullying, it puts everyone on a par, it is more convienient because you don't need to decide what to wear for the next day and if you wear own clothes to school there's no separation between school wear and out of school wear.

In terms of banning computers that's a hard one because they are used every day and are a major aspect of business nowadays. I suppose you could say that there is a lot of addiction to computers which isn't healthy, children spend too long on computers rather than playing outside, they aren't really necessary - they provide a simpler route but we could live without them and that because of the advances in technology with computers, there are jobs that can be done by computers and don't need us anymore so it might cause an increase in unemployment.

I don't know whether this is useful - just off the top of my head!!

Your DSL company probably will not give you any support on the router *unless* you bought it from them.

However, it does sound like either:

1. A matter of plugging the wires up in the right place.

2. A configuration problem with your router.

The DSL modem obviously recognizes the router or you wouldn't be able to log on with either computer.

As an alternative, your router probably has four ports for computers, try pluggin in the non-working computer to a different port and see if you have a bad port.

It depends what spec computer you are wanting cheap. If it is gaming you' want to do, then it is probably best to buy all the parts seperatly. ebuyer.com is a cheap place for parts I have found. However, if you are looking for something which will do the basic tasks such as browse web, watch videos, use office applications, then you may want to think about trying to buy one from a company which is upgrading computers. Ebay would be a good place, I purchased a laptop from there for 拢300 and it isn't too bad. Nothing I haven't been able to work with anyway.

It is nice that you have passion to join IT industry. First of all, let me say that now a days people should have basic knowledge in using computers. This is called computer literacy. The reason I ask: I have a bunch of old PCs, too old and obsolete to be worth anything, and I'd like to connect one via DCC to my main computer, to use the legacy unit as possibly a server. I have never heard of this being done. My choice would be to use Ethernet; not only is the hardware dirt cheap (you can get an Ethernet card for about ten bucks), but you might not even have to buy it: at least some of the old clunkers probably already have Ethernet cards. Your machines are probably too old to have USB ports, which would be another way to proceed.

Depends on your OS - if you have MS type OS, then you can get SW that will change the region code in SW easily and many times. Similar things exist for other OSes.

Some drives will only let you change them a few times, then they are 'locked' to the last selection - this is usually the case in normal 'single region' 'DVD players', but did not use to be the case for PCs - but who knows if the manufacturers have been bullied? However in Australia, this was ruled illegal, so new ones have to be 'region free' - you can get the codes to unlock older ones.

You may consider connecting these computer thru a network like a router, I recommend a linksys or d-link.. Its very easy to do so. Since vista is new I am not sure how to connect thru a crossover cables, but you should have no problems with the router...if you need help doing so let me know.

Either way, I'd do it differently. Buy a router (about $25, $10 on ebay) and connect them both to that, as well as your broadband connection.

Then you could just have everything work, without banging your head against the wall trying to kluge this together.

It's possible for any computer to get a virus or spyware issue.. they all have some type of harddrive in them that a virus or spyware could locate itself. Apple has just been proven to be a better computer, but you have to have a good knowledge of computers to use them. If you don't know much about computers dont get an Apple.
Apple computers have a different processing systemthen pc's. The majority of the computer viruses out there today are developed specifically for pc's. Because of the complexity of apple sytems it is much more difficult toget a virus oin your computer, however it is not impossible. Most routers have 4 or more connections for clients. Just connect both PC's to the router. You do not need a phone/cable connection.

Configure PC 1 with the following IP address info:

IP 192.168.1.1

Subnet mask 255.255.255.0

Gateway 192.168.1.2

Configure PC 2:

IP 182.168.1.2

Mask 255.255.255.0

Gateway 192.168.1.1

That should work...if the router has no additional ports you can also use a Crossover network cable available in all good PC stores.

As long as both computers have a network plug, you don't need the router. Just run your crossover cable between the two. Then just run the network setup wizard from the network connections folder in the control panel.

It all depends on the license, open source software you won't have any problem. Some licenses only allow the installation on one machine only, and some allow you to install on as many machines as you like but only use the software on one computer at a time, you would need to read the terms %26 conditions carefully (if you want to stay strictly to the rules).

If you are talking about windows then I think it's one license per machine.

Unless you are using them for some kind of business though, most people don't really care, I load my software on as many machines as I feel like (including some of my friends).
Whenever you install a software, the initial display that pops-out at the beginning of the installation is the EULA (End-User License Agreement) which is a long text most of us never bother to read. But it actually defines the detailed terms and conditions under which you can use the said software legally. At the bottom of the display it asks you whether you "Agree" or "Disagree" with the terms by clicking on the relevant button.

In addition to the physical connection (crossover cable or hub as in previous answers) you will also need to supply the TCP/IP protocol with TCP/IP addresses manually, unless you are connected to a DHCP server.

Most inexpensive home routers will perform this function if connected to the network and if the PC's have "automatic" selected in the TCP/IP options.

If not using DHCP, you need to manually assign a "local" network address on the same subnet to each computer. Simplest to use a network address like: 192.168.1.xxx where xxx is unique to each computer on your local network, and varies from 0-255 (best to avoid 0,1,254 and 255 since these sometimes have special meanings!)

Another source of this error might be manually assigning the same address to more than one connected PC.

Make sure they are in the same workgroup. Windows XP has a tutorial on networking. Select Start then "Help and Support". On the left side, select Networking and the Web". Then select "Networking". This will help you setup your network properly.
It probably means that you're not using a router, and from your description it sounds like you may have just connected the computers directly to each other with a cable. If you do this, they won't be able to talk with each other. Try the same using a hub or a router.
Make sure both computers are on the same operating system with the same updates installed, secondly make sure both computers can connect to the internet by themselves. Last make sure you have no firewalls other than the windows firewall turned on because many of them come default with port forwarding disabled and your router won't be able to reassign IPs to the computers, making the operating system think there is "limited connectivity" because it can't locate the 2nd computer at the address it's looking for it at.
I'm assumming you're trying to connect one computer to another using 1 cable. The least expensive way to do this is to use a crossover cable. You could also buy a switch and use 2 standard ethernet cables.

I reeeeeally want an ipod =] My mum had one of the first ones but as soon as she put itunes on her computer, all the computers in the house couldn't get on the internet, she phoned BT and the first question they asked was if we'd installed any ipod software recently, so we found that was the problem - they gave us a patch but it didn't work -_- then my mum had to completely restore her computer back to the beginning because it messed up all her media files or something O_o She tried again and the same thing happened. (So any solutions have to be pretty definate because my mum'll go mad if her computer gets wrecked again hehe)

I searched around for answers to this or if anyone had had similar problems but I never found anything. So I'm hoping one of you guys can help!! :D My mum says if I find a solution then I can get an ipod :P

Sounds like you're using a PC. The first version of iTunes for Windows had a few bugs and some people did experience problems similar to yours.

I think jb90123 gave you the same answer I would. Power supply's are a maybe, because they are usually 100-300 watt units that would not work in a modern system. Also, the CPU's are almost worthless if they are 500 mhz or less. And cases from old computers are usually not compatible for modern motherboard port layout. Plus they tend to be heavy cases and are usually full of dust.

OF course there are many things on an computer that may be savage basically the whole computer can mixed and spread to other computers.

I don't think I would take the Motherboard for some reasons eatheir short circuited or the battery on it has died or to much dust has over heated it and died.

No answer: you can not get an performance upgrades by changing your OBD-II sensor. in fact, if you alter that your check engine light will come on and you wont pass any smog checks.

Now if your car is stock there is no real benefit to doing this because your cars computer is optimally programmed from the factory. Instead of tying yourself down with Micro$oft which will cost a small fortune wether (a wether being a castrated goat) it be a perpetual license, ie a 1 one off payment, or a rolling license so what many engineering companies do and look at Open Source as an option.

They usually can't just give them away because they were purchased with tax dollars. Usually they are given credit when they buy the new ones or they can auction them off.
In most cases they go to get refurbished and sent on to charity or developing countries.

Put simply they wipe with magnets, spring clean and re-use.

If you want one I reccomend you say you will give a little donation to charity. Makes sense and everyones a winner.

first of all, the network name must be the same for all the computers in the network. Secondly, the files, folders or printers must be shared. Otherwise you can't access to them.

A printer switch will do the job, but ids not a good answer and they are expensive. I don't see your objection to network printing, and this is the easiest way.
