If all you want to do is to connect the 2 PCs together to play games, then you only need to get a CAT-5 cable in a crossover configuration. The crossover cable will enable 2 PCs to "talk" to each other without the need for any hardware device in between. You should be able to get it from Radio Shack or whatever computer accessories shop.

Once you've got the cable plugged into the network cards in your 2 PCs, you'd then need to set the IP addresses to be within the same range. Assuming you're running Windows XP, do this by going to My Network Places and right-click on Local Area Connection, select Properties. In the General tab, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties button. Select 'Use the following IP address:'. In IP address, type in 192.168.1.101 for the 1st PC, and 192.168.1.102 for the 2nd PC. In Subnet Mask, type 255.255.255.0 for both PCs. You can leave Default Gateway blank.

Next go to Network Connections from your Control Panel and run the Set up a home or small office network wizard. Go through the steps making sure to choose your computer as one that connects to a network that does not access the internet. Also make sure that on both computers, you have put in DIFFERENT computer names, but the SAME NETWORK NAME. Restart both PCs and cross your fingers.
