i hav 2 computers running on win 98se , both of them hav 10/100 mps ethernet card installed , and a cross cat5 cable but dont know how to configure them . i need to connect them for printer sharing and files trasfer . please help !!!!!!!

Long time since i have used that but like XP im pretty sure it still has a network wizzard. Open Network Places and find an icon or link to Network Wizard.
If not you will need to manual set one up. This might help you a bit, says it has a wizard.

After the cable is in place you can configure a new network connection to identify and create a network connection between the two computers. You can give each computer an ip address for example 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3 and a subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Then enable print and file sharing on each computer.
