How to network 3 computers using hub , bsnl broadband connection?

i have 4 pcs. I have 1 bsnl broadband connection , modem is smartax mt 880 . I got hub , cross cables. Actually i know hard ware is alrite , as i previously called one networking professional and everything was going smooth till i installed new xp in all computers. I want to know step by step how to configure them all , all from tcp/ip thing to setting lan connections. Just think i am totally dumb in this. Every reply will be appreciated.

don't use cross cables. use straight cables if you're connecting to a hub. if you have windows xp and there are no issues with the computers themselves, most likely the network adapter will pick up an IP address automatically when you turn the pc on

If you upgraded to XP, then it automatically becomes the master if other systems are not XP. You 'll first need to goto control panel and then -%26gt;Network and Sharing. From there you need to start "Setup a Network Connection".

The Wizard should do all the settings for you automatically. Keep a USB stick handy as it will allow you to transfer settings to other PCs in your network.

If you have done this before on 98 even with help then XP should be as easy as a breeze. Otherwise let me know and I'll guide you through it.

Since you are using a HUB I also advise you to put all your system on the same WORKGROUP (which you can access by right clicking "My Computer" -%26gt; Properties.)

P.S. In reply to big_jerm : Crossover cables are used for HUB as they are single bus connection similar to direct PC-to-PC. Straight/parallel cables are used for router where the BUS is NOT shared. Please do not confuse him as this unverified info could cost people money.
