Dells prices must me wonky cause quad cores usually cost more. The difference is the number of cores in the processor in the duo there are two cores which is kinda like having two processors in one, and the quad is like four processors in one, the more cores the more power. Hard drive partitions are when you turn 1 hardrive into two. This is done by splitting it in half and when ever it is connected to the computer it shows itself as two volumes. Ok this is how it works. A core 2 DUO processor is two CPU's or processors or "little computer brains" on one dye(thing that processors are on) A core 2 quad is a dye that has 4 processors on it. simple as that. A hard drive partition is pretty much a split in where your hard drive space goes for instance. On a 500gb hard drive 100gb partition might be for movies 100gb would be for back up of data and the other 300gb would be general purpose
duo core is a brand, i think its really called core2duo and its a dual core processor, a quad core... hence the name, means 4 cores in the processor. a hard drive partition is a section of the hard drive, you can have 1 partition, meaning the os, the whole hard drive and if you have 2 partitions, it means that your hard drive is divided in 2.

Yes you can have 3 comps sharing this connection. When you configure your wireless router (most have instructions or a CD with a wizard to help set them up) and if you are going to secure it, make sure you remember the WEP(which sucks) or WPA key you have configured on the router and just go launch your wireless manager on each computer. it should see the router if it is in range and all you need to do is highlight it and select a connect option. If the router is secured, it will ask you for the key or passphrase enter this and that should be it.

Under advanced options on both compuers, there will be an option to "leave messages on server"

Select that on both computers.

There is also the option to delete after X days... Set it to 2 or 3 days (however long it is between you logging in to BOTH computers...)

I have just set up a US iTunes Account and whilst setting this account up my UK iTunes Account has been frozen. I had a huge amount of music, etc. which I purchased with this UK Account. As the old account seems to been frozen I cannot now deauthorise any of the 3 computers with i had authorised, or authorise any new computers so when transferring music to a new computer I will not be able to play the tracks from my original account. My new UK account is working fine but only covers purchases made from today when I set it up. I am slightly concerned (no idea if I should be or not really) that my original UK account seems to have been frozen / disabled by Apple at the same time as setting up the US account, with no notification to me. This is a stupid question, I know. If I was to purchase a copy of Win XP could I use it on more than one computer? We have multiple computers at my home. I would hate to have to buy a copy for each. I read somewhere that you could only use it once? We run XP and have had to pay someone to reinstall and it gets expensive. No, it is not possible since after you install XP to the computer, you will either need to call Microsoft or your computer will automatically connect to Microsoft to verfiy each computer/licence before they allow you to use XP on it. If you are sharing the same router:

On the computer where the program resides, right click on the C drive and select "share this drive".

You should be able to see that drive on the other computer under "My Network Places".

This usually works but there are softwares that won't let the program be shared.
Depending upon what you want to do. If you want to have the capability for two people to work on the same database/program at the same time, you will need a separate program that will enable you to do that. If you just want to share the program and be able to access it from another computer, then a simple networking will do.
You may need to get in contact with the maker of that program. They probably have a network license. You cant legally run the program on both computers, unless it specifically states that you can. You would also need to contact them to see if the program can be simultaneously ran at the same time.
You can do it only it the software supports network use. You'll have to install the program on both PC but the database that your software uses will have to be shared. Both computers will have to point to the same database file. But like I mentionned earlier that's only if the software handles network use.

Acer computers are pretty good. I was thinking about buying one myself. You can get internet, word processing, watch movies, burn CDs and DVDs. They work as well as any other computer. According to Microsoft you can only have one license per computer. You would have to order another one(NOT THE WHOLE DISK..just the license) through them. BUT...who listens to Microsoft. Personally i would just go ahead and install it on all three of your computers. If you want to cover your behind go to the link below and input your license to see if you can get another one. I repeat you don't need to buy three copies of windows for the three computers...just three licenses.

As for loading your copy only one time is not true. You can use your copy to re-image your computer as many times as you want.
First, you need to understand that SP2 is something that was added to windows XP. If your computers already have windows XP on it, you will just need one CD that install SP2 and use it on your three computers. If this is the case, you could just download sp2 and not need any cds (unless you're on dialup).

if you hook at least one of the computers up directly to the fax/printer you can share out the other printer, just go to

start

and go thru the setup wizard
if they are both mac computers the you only need an airport extreme base station. this has a usb port on it that you plug your printer/fax into, and the computers connect by wireless cards.

if on a PC you might need to connect a usb hub to the fax/printer, and carry the wire to both computers. if that does not work, then you need to connect the computers with a cat5 (aka Ethernet) cable and plug the printer in to just one. this should work if networked right.

if one or both are laptops you might have some more problems. I have not looked into wireless routers for PC bassed systems recntly, but last time I did look they did not suport printers.

I have a 'Slightly Older Model' Acer Aspire 1642NWLMi, Bought it while I was working in Saudi Arabia, on 31 Dec. 2005.

The only problem I have ever had was, Could not get Acer to accept the SN #. for registration. ( Acer claims my model was not made for sale or use in the USA %26#125; the key board is 'Dual Language' English %26 Arabic%26#123; ) There 1 Year Warranty must be good, it has never gave me any trouble or been in a repair shop.

It does every thing I ask it to do, and has never overheated or lockup..

I have a 'few' other Acer products, most of them execed there warranty with out giving out or spending time in repair shops.

i had an old Atari computer back in the 80's that had 48K Ram, My computer now has 2GB (2,000,000 K)...not bad for about 20 years...
in the later half of the 60's I leased time on IBM's biggest mainframe. (before monitors, before keyboard input.)

All information was input through data punch cards and paper tape with holes punched in them. Now remember that this computer and it's tape drives covered an most of a floor of a large office building. This computer was the main computer for running both the Toronto and Chicago stock markets and other very large businesses.

If I remember correctly the main memory was 360 k, my camera has more memory. Before the mainframe I was referring to IBM had another smaller mainframe that I leased time on and I believe it was called the IBM 1150 much smaller, about the size of mini van but not as wide. Don't remember the memory it had but it was very slow compaired to the IBM 360/65 I described above.

Back in his early Bill Gates said in an interview that he couldn't imagine anyone but business enterprises requiring or wanting more the 360k in their computers and the top dog of IBM I believe in the late 50's or early 60's making a remark to the press the there was no way that ordinary people would ever need their own computers. Before the mid 60's my memory about computers is very sketchy but suffice it to say that the memory of the earlier systems like IBM, Univac and others were in the single digits. BTW, thanks for making me feel old.

If it is not connecting to the internet you need to install the win 98 Drivers for the modem. (dial up or modem Ethernet card for DSL?).

If you installed the correct drivers and it does not work, test the card in another computer.

Another possibility is the software or browser does not support win 98.

When I try to use it on the 3rd pc it says that I have too many computers using and I need to deactivate one of them. So I attempted to deactivate it from the laptop but was unsuccessful. I then just uninstalled all together. Still on the 3rd pc, Yahoo Music says that I have it on too many. Their customer service sucks and I cant seem to get any help. I'm not sure about AT%26T DSL, but when I helped my buddy hook up Quest DSL, the modem they supplied has 4 ports for computers. We were able to hook up a desktop and two laptops right from the modem using Ethernet cables.

A router doesn't supply the signal, it just splits it up. I'd bet that with your current setup you have the modem bringing the DSL into your house and the router splitting it between computers. The Quest DSL modem has the router/splitter built right into the modem itself - if you want to know if AT%26T does too, give them a call.
Yes, you need a modem and a router. The modem gets plugged into the router. It is not hard to set up. You can buy your own router (I personally use D-Link and have had no problems whatsoever in the past 3 years that I've had it) and it gives you instructions how to set everything up. You will need to buy cables to go from each computer to the router, but that's it.

You MUST have a crossover network cable connected to the two machines if there is no hub/router between them.

A crossover cable swaps the send/receive cables on one connector.

I think you have twisted pair confused with a crossover cable. You need a crossover network cable between 2 network interface ports before it will work. A crossover cable is simply a networking cable with the wires on one end reversed. Sounds like everything else you have done is right tho!

1) Make sure the cable your are using is Cat 5 Cross over cable, two computers are connected through cross cable.

2) Make sure the light is glowing when you connect the cable to your second computer, this indicates the cable is working fine

3) Make sure the ethernet card drivers are installed well, this can be checked in your device manager

The router is full? maybe other people (neighbors) are using your router without your knowledge. Try setting up a password for your router. Then maybe it won't be full and the computer without internet can use it.
