the computer i have now is hard wired to the router but the router doesnt have any more jacks, its only for 1 computer. i'm getting a second desktop pretty soon and want to find out how can i split that connection to both of the computers. also there will be a big distance between the 2, and the ethernet wire will run across the house if i use the router that i have now.
How can i split a cable internet connection to 2 computers using a single router?free spyware remover
Your computer is connected to a cable modem, not a router. So get yourself a wireless router, and a wireless card, that would solve your problem of having two computers using the one internet connection, and it solves your distance problem.

What kind of router are we dealing with?
buy a new router there not that expensive any more look on craigslist
By the way you describe the device, I would say that it is not a router, it is a cable modem. I suggest that you get a WiFi router and a WiFi adapter for the more distant computer.
Good luck and have fun.
Is it a USB connected router? If it is, you can use ICS - Internet Connection Sharing. You'd need to set up an ethernet link between the two PCs... and then configure ICS. The help on ICS is pretty good, so follow that.
